What Is a Vow Renewal and Why Renew Your Vows in Koh Samui?

A vow renewal is a chance to celebrate your marriage and the life you’ve built together. For couples planning a vow renewal in Koh Samui, it can be a beautiful way to combine a holiday, anniversary or family trip with something really meaningful.

You don’t have to have a special reason for renewing your vows. Some couples choose to do it for a milestone anniversary, some want to celebrate getting through a difficult period together, and others simply like the idea of saying those words to each other again.

For some couples, it’s just about having a special moment together while they’re on holiday in Koh Samui.

And for others, it’s about the whole family.

We’ve had couples come to Koh Samui with their children and choose to have a simple vow renewal on the beach, with their children involved in the ceremony. It can be a lovely way to celebrate not only the marriage, but the family you’ve created together.

Why choose a vow renewal in Koh Samui?

A vow renewal in Koh Samui can be a beautiful way to combine an anniversary or family holiday with something really meaningful.

There is something rather special about being able to step away from everyday life and spend a little time together somewhere beautiful.

Perhaps you’re already coming to Koh Samui for an anniversary holiday. Perhaps you’ve been married for five years, twenty years or even longer. Or perhaps you’ve simply reached a point where you want to stop for a moment and celebrate the two of you.

A beach in Koh Samui provides a beautiful setting without needing to make the occasion feel overly formal.

You could have a small ceremony at sunset, a few flowers, some music and photographs afterwards.

Or you can make more of an occasion of it, with your children, family or close friends joining you and dinner afterwards.

There really isn’t a right or wrong way to renew your vows.

Do you need a special reason?

Not at all.

Some couples choose a vow renewal for a significant anniversary. Others have been through difficult times and want to celebrate coming through them together.

For some, it’s about remembering the promises they made when they first got married and making them again after years of sharing a life together.

And sometimes there isn’t a big story behind it at all.

You might simply be on holiday in Koh Samui, look at your partner and think, “Wouldn’t it be lovely to renew our vows while we’re here?”

That’s reason enough.

What happens during a vow renewal ceremony?

This is one of the lovely things about a vow renewal — you can make it as personal as you want.

There are no legal requirements because you are already married. A vow renewal isn’t a second legal marriage. It’s a personal ceremony to celebrate your relationship.

You might choose to:

  • Say your original vows again
  • Write new vows for each other
  • Exchange rings again
  • Walk down the beach together
  • Have music for your entrance and exit
  • Include flowers and simple beach décor
  • Have a professional photographer capture the ceremony
  • Include your children or other family members
  • Have a sand ceremony
  • Include a handfasting ceremony
  • Finish with dinner together on the beach or at a nearby location

Or you can keep it incredibly simple.

We’ve had couples who really just wanted to stand together on the beach, say a few words to each other and have some beautiful photographs to remember the moment.

There is no need to make it complicated if that’s not what you want.

Including your children in a vow renewal

For couples with children, a vow renewal can become something particularly meaningful.

Rather than the ceremony being just about the two of you, your children can be part of it too.

Depending on their ages, they might walk down the beach with you, take part in a sand ceremony, have their own words or promises to make, or simply stand with you while you renew your vows.

A sand ceremony can be especially lovely for a family. Different colours of sand can be poured together into one container, representing the family coming together.

For older children, we can also look at other ways of involving them so that they feel that the ceremony is about the whole family, rather than simply watching from the sidelines.

Do you need a celebrant for a vow renewal?

You don’t have to have a celebrant, but many couples like having someone guide the ceremony.

A celebrant can help tell a little of your story, introduce the ceremony, guide you through your vows and make sure everything flows naturally.

This can be particularly helpful if you’re not sure what you want to say or how to structure the ceremony.

And because a vow renewal isn’t a legal ceremony, there’s much more freedom to make it personal.

Your ceremony can be romantic, funny, simple, emotional — or a mixture of all of those things.

What about flowers, photography and décor?

Again, that’s completely up to you.

Some couples want very little — perhaps just a beautiful location and a few flowers.

Others want a more styled beach ceremony with flowers, an arch or other décor, music and professional photography.

Photography is something we particularly recommend because the ceremony itself can be quite short, but the photographs give you something to look back on afterwards.

And if you’re bringing your children, having photographs of the whole family together on the beach can be particularly special.

You can also make more of an evening of it with dinner afterwards, either on the beach or at a suitable nearby location.

How much planning does a vow renewal need?

Usually, less than a wedding.

But there are still details that need to be organised properly — the location, celebrant, flowers, décor, photography, music and any dinner or other arrangements.

That’s where having someone local can make things much easier.

We can help coordinate the different elements behind the scenes so that you don’t have to spend your holiday trying to organise suppliers yourself.

A vow renewal can be whatever you want it to be

Perhaps you’ve been married for 25 years and want to celebrate everything you’ve shared.

Perhaps you’ve had a difficult few years and want to mark a new beginning.

Perhaps you’re bringing your children to Koh Samui and want to celebrate your family.

Or perhaps you’re simply on holiday together and want to do something special.

There really isn’t one reason to renew your vows.

And there doesn’t need to be.

A vow renewal is simply a chance to stop for a moment, look at the person you’ve shared your life with and say, “I’d choose you all over again.”
