Thai Monk Blessing in Koh Samui | What to Expect at a Temple

If you’re visiting Koh Samui and looking for something meaningful to do together, you may have come across the idea of a Thai monk blessing.

For couples, it can be a beautiful addition to a wedding or vow renewal. But it doesn’t have to be connected to a wedding at all.

Some couples choose to visit a temple simply to receive a blessing for their future together, mark an anniversary, or take a quiet moment to celebrate their relationship.

What makes the experience particularly special is that you’re not recreating a Thai tradition somewhere else. You are going to a temple and experiencing it in the place where that tradition belongs.

Arriving at the temple

The experience begins when you arrive at the temple.

There is something quite different about stepping away from the beach, restaurants and busy holiday atmosphere and entering a Buddhist temple.

Things naturally become quieter.

The monks are seated and the ceremony takes place in a calm and respectful environment. We arrange the details beforehand and explain what you can expect, so you don’t have to worry about knowing the customs or what you should do.

You can simply be there and take it all in.

The monks’ chanting

The ceremony usually begins with the monks chanting Buddhist prayers.

You may not understand the words, but you don’t need to. The rhythm of the chanting creates a peaceful atmosphere and gives you a chance to slow down and be present.

For many couples, this is one of the things they remember most.

After the excitement of a holiday—or a wedding—it can be lovely to have a moment where nobody is asking you to be anywhere else.

Lighting the candles

Depending on the ceremony, the couple may be invited to light candles.

Candles, together with flowers and incense, are traditional offerings used to show respect in Buddhist ceremonies. The light is also associated with wisdom and clarity.

It’s a simple ritual, but it gives the couple a moment to pause before the blessing continues.

Making offerings to the monks

An important part of the experience is making offerings to the monks.

We can arrange the offering baskets beforehand. These may contain practical everyday items, food or other things traditionally offered to monks.

The offerings are a way of showing generosity, respect and gratitude.

Couples may also present flowers to the monks.

For someone visiting Thailand, this is a lovely opportunity to participate rather than simply observe. You’re not just watching a ceremony—you are taking part in it.

The sacred white thread

You may notice a white cotton thread being used during the blessing.

This is known as Sai Sin and is commonly used in Thai Buddhist blessing ceremonies.

The thread is associated with protection and the sharing of blessings. During some ceremonies it is connected to the couple, symbolising the blessings being passed on to them.

It’s one of those details that can be easy to miss if you don’t know what it represents.

The blessing of the wedding rings

If you’re visiting the temple as part of your wedding or vow renewal, your rings can sometimes be included in the blessing.

The monks may bless the rings during the ceremony, giving them an additional connection to the day and the experience you’ve shared together.

If you’re not getting married, of course, there is no need for rings. The blessing can simply be about the two of you and your future together.

The holy water blessing

Another part of the ceremony you may experience is a blessing with holy water.

The monk may gently sprinkle blessed water over you as part of the ceremony.

In Thai Buddhist tradition, water is used in blessing and purification rituals, and the experience is intended to bring blessings and good fortune.

It’s usually a very peaceful moment.

The ceremonial head garland

Depending on the temple and ceremony, the couple may also receive or wear a traditional white ceremonial head garland, sometimes referred to as a mongkol.

The exact customs can vary, so we always explain what will happen during your particular ceremony.

For couples, it can be a beautiful symbol of being connected and beginning a new chapter together.

The flower petals

Towards the end of some ceremonies, flowers or flower petals may be used as part of the blessing.

Marigolds are particularly common in Thailand and are associated with auspiciousness and good fortune.

After the quiet chanting and blessings, the flowers bring a lovely sense of celebration to the end of the experience.

It doesn’t have to be your wedding

This is one of the things we particularly love about a temple monk blessing.

You don’t need to be getting married.

Perhaps you’re celebrating ten or twenty years together.

Perhaps you’re renewing your vows.

Perhaps you’ve been married for years and want to mark a new chapter.

Or perhaps you’re simply on holiday in Koh Samui and would like to do something meaningful together rather than spend another day at the pool.

A temple blessing can be just for the two of you.

There doesn’t have to be a reception afterwards. There doesn’t have to be a big group of guests.

It can simply be a quiet and personal experience during your time in Thailand.

A different kind of memory from Koh Samui

Most holidays eventually end.

You take your photographs home, unpack your suitcase and go back to everyday life.

A temple monk blessing gives you the opportunity to create a memory that is a little different.

You have taken part in a genuine Thai tradition, spent time together away from the usual holiday routine and received blessings for the next chapter of your lives.

For some couples, it’s part of their wedding or vow renewal.

For others, it’s simply something they did together while they were here.

Either way, the important thing is that you had the time to stop, enjoy the experience and be present together.

Sometimes you don’t need to plan a whole wedding to create a meaningful moment. You just need to make time for one.
