If you’re dreaming of a beach wedding in Koh Samui, you’ve probably noticed that many ceremonies take place just before sunset.
That’s no coincidence.
After planning weddings and elopements in Koh Samui for many years, we’ve found that late afternoon and sunset create the most relaxed, romantic atmosphere for couples celebrating their wedding day.
While every couple is different, there are some very good reasons why sunset continues to be the most popular choice.
A More Relaxed Start to Your Wedding Day
One of the things we love most about sunset weddings is that there’s no rush.
Instead of getting ready early in the morning, couples can enjoy a relaxed breakfast, spend time together, visit the spa, or simply enjoy their holiday before getting ready.
Most of our ceremonies begin between 4:30 pm and 5:00 pm, although we adjust the timing throughout the year depending on the season and the sunset time.
It creates a calm, enjoyable pace to the whole day.
The Light Is Magical
There’s a reason photographers love sunset.
The warm, golden light creates beautiful, natural photographs that simply aren’t possible in the middle of the day.
The colours become softer, the atmosphere feels more romantic and everything seems to slow down.
One of our favourite moments is watching couples take a quiet walk along the beach immediately after their ceremony while the sun is beginning to set.
Those often become their favourite photographs from the entire day.

It’s Much More Comfortable
Koh Samui is a tropical island, and the middle of the day can be very warm.
By late afternoon the temperature becomes much more comfortable for everyone.
Guests are happier.
Couples feel more relaxed.
Even your flowers benefit from the cooler temperatures.
It’s simply a much more enjoyable time to celebrate.
A Sunset We Will Never Forget
One wedding will always stay with us.
For several days the weather had been overcast and there hadn’t been a proper sunset at all.
The couple were quietly hoping for just a little sunshine.
Then, on the afternoon of their wedding, the sky completely transformed.
The sunset was filled with incredible shades of gold, pink and orange, creating one of the most spectacular evenings we’ve ever experienced.
It reminded us that every wedding day is unique, and sometimes nature gives you an unforgettable surprise.
The Biggest Mistake Couples Make
One of the most common misunderstandings is thinking that the ceremony should begin exactly at sunset.
In reality, that’s far too late.
In Thailand, once the sun disappears below the horizon, it becomes dark surprisingly quickly.
Unlike some countries where twilight seems to last for ages, the light in Koh Samui changes very fast.
We always recommend beginning the ceremony before sunset, allowing plenty of time for your vows, photographs and those special moments together while the light is still perfect.

Local Knowledge Makes a Difference
Planning a beach wedding isn’t only about choosing a beautiful location.
As local wedding planners, we also consider things like:
- Seasonal sunset times.
- Tide levels.
- Beach permissions.
- Guest comfort.
- The flow of the day.
- The best timing for photography.
These are all small details that make a big difference to your overall experience.
Ending the Day Perfectly
One of the reasons we love sunset weddings is how naturally the celebration continues afterwards.
Many couples enjoy a champagne toast, a romantic walk along the beach and a private dinner overlooking the ocean.
It feels relaxed, unhurried and incredibly special.
For us, that’s what a destination wedding should be about.

Our Advice
If you’re considering a beach wedding in Koh Samui, don’t choose your ceremony time based only on the sunset itself.
Think about the entire experience.
The relaxed atmosphere, beautiful light, comfortable temperatures and natural flow of the day are all part of what makes sunset weddings so memorable.
After many years of planning weddings in Koh Samui, it’s easy to understand why so many of our couples choose to say “I do” as the day gently comes to an end.
