Much of today’s wedding was in Chinese. I don’t speak a word but it didn’t matter; one of the couple’s friends translated everything I was saying, line by line. The couple said their vows in Mandarin, and then exchanged rings. The atmosphere was very intimate, even though we were all right by the beach with waves crashing against the rocks just by us. All the friends and family – there were about a dozen – stayed in a villa just above the beach, and had a reception right after the wedding. Increasingly, weddings take place in villas, not just in resorts and hotels. Most villas are able to stage weddings, or wedding planners come to them and arrange everything on behalf of the couple. Villas give the couple more privacy and often there’s more choice when it comes to what’s possible.
